We compiled a list of the most active California contractors, by looking at those contractors that obtained the most permits from California building departments in 2014.
This list considers all contractors regardless of classification type, including home builders, HVAC specialists, plumbers, general contractors, etc. The total number of building permits captures different types of projects. Sometimes, permits are missing project valuation, we controlled for this by calculating average valuation as a function of total project valuation and the permits that did include project valuation.
After considering the top 25, a few things stand out:
-
Solar surge – 5 of the top 25 contractors are solar companies, with SolarCity and Vivint Solar taking the number one and two slot respectively. The golden coast has long had a reputation as a center of clean energy, and the recent surge in solar permits perhaps reflects the average citizen finally putting those beliefs into action.
-
Rebound in home construction – The presence of 5 home builders on the list of most active California contractors suggests an upward trend in the housing market post-financial crisis slump.
-
Home Depot success beyond the store – Clocking in at number 3, The Home Depot has clearly made progress in reaching customers beyond the store. The At-Home Services program offers a broad range of home services that include both installation and repair projects.
The top 25 are listed in the table below along with links to their BuildZoom profile matched to their corporate headquarters. Many of these companies have multiple licenses and profiles on BuildZoom. Currently, you can see their other profiles by searching for their business name and location on BuildZoom. In the future, we’ll be introducing a section on these profiles to allow you to easily navigate all of the profiles associated with national companies.
