In December, BuildZoom flagged a permit issued to Bridge Housing Corp. for construction of a new 115-unit, 5-story apartment complex in San Leandro, CA. In addition to the residences, the plans call for retail and parking facilities. The total cost of construction is expected to reach $50 million, although the initial permit valuation, for the major construction, comes to $22.5 million.
When the apartments are complete, there will be 250 spaces in the basement for BART commuters. Another development project nearby will supply a further 450 spaces (to be completed in 2016.)
The City of San Leandro, on the east side of San Francisco Bay, has recently accelerated support for new developments; the Bridge Housing project is backed by about $30 million in public funding. Other projects in the works include office parks, a new Kaiser Permanente office (which opened April 2014) and hospital, and even public “maker spaces” where artists and tech inventors can meet to collaborate and experiment.
According to newly elected San Leandro mayor Pauline Cutter, “(The community) is growing, and we need vibrant new city development to continue that trend.” She added, “the temporary inconvenience (to parking) will pay off in the end as we will ultimately double the commuter parking available, and we will have a quality transit-orientated housing development built, encouraging more people to use mass transit.”
