Part of a plan to develop more than 600,000 sf of new research and office space, Northeastern University has been issued a permit to construct the first structure, a 220,000 sf Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex. The bold design from Payette features a graceful, organically-inspired facade, along with a bridge to connect the new site with the existing campus across Amtrak and MBTA rail lines. The permit values the project at almost $110 million, although the university reports the total investment at $225 million.
[threecol_two]Northeastern broke ground on the facility in December 2014 and hopes to complete the 6-story building by 2016 or 2017. It should qualify for LEED Platinum status. Professors and students will have wet and dry lab space, offices, classrooms, and a 280-seat auditorium. The design of the building is meant to facilitate exchange and contact among the Colleges of Science, Health Science, Engineering, and Computer and Information Science. A large open atrium and extensive common areas underscore this idea; the project is also accompanied by near-constant references to “interdisciplinary” in press releases, speeches by the University president, the name of the building, and even the building permits themselves.[/threecol_two]
